{"id":1110,"date":"2013-06-18T15:07:03","date_gmt":"2013-06-18T15:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/?p=1110"},"modified":"2022-01-16T09:09:05","modified_gmt":"2022-01-16T16:09:05","slug":"island-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/?p=1110","title":{"rendered":"Island Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australian yachties, (Tolly &amp; Jas from S\/V Le Mistral and Ian &amp; Wendy from S\/V Outsider) who\u00a0we have followed down the\u00a0various islands since Fort de France invited us to join them on an island\u00a0tour of Grenada with Cutty, who came highly recommended.<\/p>\n<p>We found out why the island is called Spice Isle as we came across an amazingly rich and diverse amount\u00a0of flora and fauna growing wild all about the island. In one particular spot,\u00a0 an old plantation Cutty found Ulang Ulang, tumeric, lemon grass; a tooth brush leaf, Cocoa, Cinnamon, Glue berries (used to glue crafts etc), nutmeg to name a few.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020643a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1111\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020643a-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"P1020643a\" width=\"246\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020641a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1112\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020641a-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"P1020641a\" width=\"252\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Below the Brazil Nut. The pod was amazing and of course contains a huge number of nuts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020652a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1113\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020652a-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"P1020652a\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020652a-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020652a.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020650a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1114\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020650a-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"P1020650a\" width=\"272\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You name it and Cutty would stop by the side of the road and\u00a0show us it growing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020655a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1115\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020655a-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"P1020655a\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020655a-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020655a.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Grand Etang Forest we even came across the beautiful coloured trunk of the Eucalyptus tree, which dots the Australian landscape.<\/p>\n<p>The Grand Etang Forest covers 1600 hectares\u00a0with some amazing waterfalls, some of which we hope to hike to.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020664a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1116\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020664a-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"P1020664a\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020664a-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020664a.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the top of the forest road we met the Mona monkey who loves mangoes and\u00a0appears swinging through the trees upon hearing the honk of the van horn.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped in Grenville at the Nutmeg\u00a0processing\u00a0plant for a tour. Prior to Hurricane Ivan in 2004\u00a0Grenada was the No 1 nutmeg exporter in the world, now no 2. 90% of the nutmeg trees were destroyed and it has taken some time for the crop to slowly come back. Farmers bring the nutmeg and mace to the plant and are paid according to the quality and weight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020681A.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1117\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020681A-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"P1020681A\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020681A-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020681A.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020692a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1118\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020692a-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"P1020692a\" width=\"282\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020701a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1119\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seismicwave.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1020701a-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"P1020701a\" width=\"268\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are huge trays at this plant to dry the nuts before being sent to one of the other plants on the island for further processing.<\/p>\n<p>We visited an old rum distillary Rivers Rum, still producing rum,\u00a0even though it wasn&#8217;t working when we were there. It uses a water wheel to crush the sugar cane and then the sugar is boiled\u00a0in copper bowls and pumped up to the fermentation tanks before being sent to the\u00a0boiler\u00a0and vaporizer. The end product is overproof white lightening\u00a0fire water. Not our best\u00a0rum tour. Needless to say the estate was very impressive and the\u00a0chocolate delicious.<\/p>\n<p>It was interesting seeing the island and views,\u00a0various vendors on the road sides and the houses which ranged from small homes\u00a0on hillsides with no raod access to upper income homes with 3 car garages.\u00a0Hurricane Ivan really caused havoc on the island and you can still see that this island with the help of other countries is still rebuilding.
